Finally cast off...

Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, London.
30th January 2017

Today we visited Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Oscar has now been in his walking cast 3 weeks now and we are just over 7 weeks post op.

Oscar had his cast and dressings removed. His foot especially around the toes where a bit smelly but not too bad!.

The doctors had the task of removing Oscars surgical button today from the bottom of this foot.

Oscar is the type of person who would rather see what someone is doing to him than be distracted. They snipped the button off whilst the hospital play worker tried to distract Oscar with bubbles and the iPad. The combination worked and there where no tears. He felt the pulling sensation and did give a little yelp as the stitches where trimmed, really brave.

The scar on the top of his foot looked great and has nicely healed, the button holes obviously where still there and will remain there until the stitches dissolve fully and the skin grows over.

His leg and foot are heavily covered in dead skin, the doctors have advised not bathing him for a few days and not to use bubble bath.

The practitioner, not Denise today as she is away providing ponseti training in Kenya, encouraged Oscar to take some steps once dressing, cast and button where removed and Oscar was great he got onto his feet with there help and put weight onto his right foot and walked across the room. Great work Oscar!!

They are happy with his foot and will now not be seeing us for just over 4 weeks before a full assessment is done, to give his foot time to get used to walking and the button wholes to close.

We managed to put Oscars socks and shoes on although his foot is a little sore and swollen still so we could do up the shoe completely. Oscar was very keen to get walking and walked all the way to the car taking a few breaks and using his frame here and there.

They are happy for Oscar to take his time apply weight to his foot and as and when needed to continue using his frame and wheelchair. Reminding him that his foot is all fixed and he can put weight on his foot and no hoping!!
